Jfast U10 Team:

As we head into the final stretch of the season, it’s been exciting to look back on what a busy and rewarding last month we’ve had. With a full schedule of races, our athletes have had so many opportunities to put their training into action. It’s been especially fun to watch them hone in on specific skills—whether that’s cleaner line choice, stronger starts, or more confidence carrying speed—and see the improvements translate directly into their racing.

Most recently, our team competed in the South Series at Sundance Mountain Resort and the YSL Series at Snowbasin Resort. We had a handful of racers earn impressive top-10 finishes, which is a testament to the hard work they’ve been putting in all season long.

It’s incredible how quickly the season has flown by.

Now our JFAST athletes are heading to IMD Finals and IMD Championships—we’re excited to see the athletes finish strong and continue building on the progress they’ve made throughout the winter!

U14 Team:

Team U14 finished their qualifying series with 2 GS races and a SL on the West Peak at the Utah Olympic Park, followed by make-up SG races held at Snowbird. Quinn W. led the way in GS with a 5th place finish followed by a victory! Ledger E. and Zach M. both put down top 20 runs. Norah C. topped the snowbird girls with a 3rd and 11th. Snowbird girls saw some of their best finishes all year with Eva W. finishing 10th, along with Charlie F. and Evelyn V. each putting down top 30 runs. In the SL, Quinn W. had a 3rd place finish, with Gage S. and Zach M. both putting down top 10 runs. Norah C. finished 13th one run with Sephy rounding out the top 30 in 28th.

To make up for the lost SG qualifiers in Tamarack- due to the (only) snowfall in 6 weeks, Snowbird was able to pick up the opportunity at the last minute. This provided the boys home-snow advantage! With an aggressive schedule based on more snow in the forecast- a rare event for this season- Quinn W. was able to capitalize with a blistering run and another victory! This result placed him as a top IMD pick for the Western Regional Team this year! quinn 1st norah 3rd

FIS:

March is not only championship month, but also a very busy month in general for FIS racers. The FIS group, in addition to the Regional Junior Championships and the National U18 Championship, has 3 other race series we are trying to juggle, along with occasionally going to school and getting a few training days in. Early in the month, Halle Hipple headed to New Hampshire to compete in the National U18 Championship. Congratulations to Halle for qualifying for her 1st national event. This was also her first time skiing in the East. The firm snow conditions and bad weather lived up to the reputation. Although a couple of the races were canceled, she had respectable finishes in Downhill and SG as well as getting to visit a few colleges that are on her list of possible choices. Additionally, we had 7 athletes attend Western Region Jr. Championships. Sebe Baudendistel, Calvin Cui, August Mennell, Quinn Costello, Avery Johnson, Mia Pagano, and Sophia Burtseva headed up to Grand Targhee for this 6-race series. They got the full spectrum of weather while there. Starting off with 2 days of beautiful sunshine and moderate temps, then 2 days of snow, followed by 2 days of fog. All races were contested, and many of our athletes earned personal best results. Calvin Cui scored his first sub-100 result in any discipline with a 93 in GS. Sebe Baudendistel scored his best ever SL result with a 102. Mia Pagano had her best GS result of the year, and Quinn Costello had a top 10 finish in both SL and GS. We will finish out the month with races at Sugar Bowl, Keystone, Winter Park, and Sun Valley. We are also looking forward to some great training at home as the thaw/freeze cycle has provided ideal conditions on our race hill. Our race calendar finishes up in April with races in Palisades and Mt. Bachelor.

Masters:

The SBSEF Masters group continues to train and race successfully. We have had fantastic training conditions at home as we move into the Spring. It has been great for Ben, Vinny, and I to see the improvements and passion in our participants. This group has been a lot of fun to work with. Unfortunately, this season with the unusual weather in the West, we have seen forced cancellation of a few of the Masters races. The championship series for Masters is coming up later this month. A few noteworthy results so far are: Brendan Gimby with 4 top 10 finishes, Erich Horsley claiming 2 wins in SL, and Richard Slabinski (Slabby) who has been in Europe racing on the International (FIS) Masters circuit and has been very competitive, most recently placing 3rd in a SG in France.
