2026-27 Freeride U19 Team

The U19 Freeride Team is our most elite program, designed for high-level athletes who have the desire, motivation, work ethic, and discipline to be successful in Freeride competition. Training is designed around the refinement of technical fundamentals along with the essential skills to maximize performance in competition. U19 athletes are expected to maintain regular training attendance and participate in all extracurricular training, including dryland training, strength and conditioning, mental skills training, and avalanche awareness education, in addition to on-snow training. On-snow training will include a variety of components designed to help athletes reach their full potential, including drills focused on refining technical skills, gate training, structured competition training, and focused freeskiing. This is our highest-level competition team, and all athletes are required to participate in at least 3 IFSA competitions.

Training will include coaching in the following areas:

Refinement of fundamental technical skiing fundamentals
Sport-specific strength and conditioning
Mental performance and mental skills training
Decision-making and risk management
Freeride competition strategy
Refinement of jumping skills and high-level freestyle maneuvers
Setting and achieving personal and competitive goals
Avalanche awareness and education

Athlete Age: 15-18 (2011, 2010, 2009, 2008 birth years)

Athlete Experience: Athletes must be able to ski all types of terrain in all snow conditions proficiently.

Athletes new to the program must participate in a tryout day in April to qualify to participate in the lottery for open spots. SBSEF holds the right to deny program access based on skill level.

Competition and Events: 3-4 IFSA Freeride competitions

Program includes:

On-snow training 2 or 4 days/week
Dryland training from early September to early November
Strength and conditioning, July to March
Holiday Camp

2026-2027 Freeride U19 Program Options and Tuition:

2-day program: $4500
- Saturday/Sunday, Friday/Saturday, or Friday/Sunday
4-day program: $5500
- Wednesday, Friday-Sunday
Woodward add-on: $650
- Thursday

Pass: Snowbird/Alta Team Seasons Pass *team discount: Snowbird $489, Alta $510*price subject to change for 2026-27
Woodward: 20% discount for a 3-month commitment
IFSA Competitors License: $105 *price subject to change
Competition Fees: Competition entrance fee, lift ticket at the host resort, and shared coach expenses for out of state events

Competitions & Events

**Note: these are 2023-24 comps, our website will be updated in the Fall when IFSA updates their calendar

SBSEF Freeride will attend specific events during the year, and coaches will sit down with each athlete pre-season to determine which competitions are best for each athlete. To adhere to IFSA’s path of advancement towards North American Championships and World events, athletes will compete in 2-3 Regional IFSA competitions, and 2-3 National IFSA competitions.

Based on season results, athletes may compete at the IFSA North American Championships and/or World Junior Championships.

Equipment Recommendations & Requirements

U19 athletes are required to have the following equipment:

U19 athletes are required to have 3 pairs of skis.
- Freeride ski 85-95mm underfoot for training and competition in firm snow conditions.
- Freeride ski 100-110 underfoot for training and competition in soft/deep snow conditions.
  - Freeride ski length should be the athlete’s height +0-10cm.
- Race or carving ski less than 80mm underfoot with a traditional tail and 13-15 m turn radius for technique training and drills.
  - Carving/race ski length should be the athlete’s height -5-15cm
Boots
- Boots that are the appropriate size and flex are the most important piece of equipment. We recommend working with a boot fitter to ensure appropriate fit and flex.
Poles
- Pole length should be approximately 65-70% of the athlete’s height. Poles with bigger powder baskets are recommended.
