SBSEF Skimo athletes Amelia B, Anneliese M, and Aspen A made the trek up to Logan Canyon for the Crowbar Backcountry Race on January 31st. All three SBSEF athletes crushed the course consisting of multiple climbs and descents with 2,500’ of elevation gain over 5+ miles. The course featured a technical bootpack, incredible views of Bear Lake, and 100% off-piste conditions. Except for a short section at the start and finish, the entire course was in backcountry terrain with quite variable and challenging snow conditions. Amelia placed first with a time of 2:07:14, and Anneliese 2nd with a time of 2:07:56 in the junior girls’ race.

The entire Skimo team has had an extremely productive season so far, and the fitness and technique of our athletes continue to improve. We have been training for all of the Skimo race disciplines, and the athletes have been having a lot of fun with various relay challenges during training. Our team will be represented in all four disciplines at the Wasatch Powderkeg at Solitude next month.

Thanks to the incredible support from Snowbird, we have been able to begin early morning training on Saturdays using the terrain accessed by the Baby Thunder lift. The athletes aren’t completely enjoying the early weekend wakeup just yet, but having access to almost three times the vertical of our Summer Road training venue with both groomed and off-piste terrain available is truly a game-changer for our team and for the development of the sport. Thank you, Snowbird!
