April Alpine Update
With the last race of the season being completed last week and the last little bit of B-net being rolled up this week, the 2024 – 2025 season has officially concluded. Albeit I suspect we still have another month of good corn skiing to be had! I think that I can speak for the entire SBSEF coaching staff when I say thank you. We all feel so privileged that we get to spend so many weekends with such a great group of talented individuals. Snowbird is definitely a special place, but it is extra special because of the community that we get to be a part of. Thanks a million!

Devo Team Update:
What an incredible winter with the Devos! It felt like every Friday brought a fresh storm, setting us up for epic powder days with the Saturday Devo crew. All season long, our Devo athletes showed up, worked hard, and it really showed in their skiing. We spent a lot of time dialing in our Cheetah Position and learning how to get forward and on that outside ski.
March was all about Freeride fundamentals—Line, Control, Technique, Fluidity, and Style & Energy. We wrapped up the month with everyone’s favorite event: the Good Vibes Only Freeride Comp. This year’s venue was Rasta Chutes, and conditions were no joke—tough and technical. Huge shoutout to every athlete who stepped up and sent it—you crushed it!

JFAST concluded its competition season with a strong showing at the Intermountain Finals at Sundance Resort, where Snowbird athletes across various age groups excelled. In the GS (Giant Slalom), Freddy C placed 5th in the U10 women’s category. On the men’s side, Benson S S secured 2nd in the U14+ men’s category, Lucas Q took 2nd, and Ryler P finished 4th in the U12 men’s category. Wyatt F earned 3rd in the U10 men’s category.
On Sunday, the SL (Slalom) showcased some impressive skiing from SBSEF athletes. Freddy C and Della C went 1st and 2nd for the U10 women’s category, and Ripley C placed 4th in the U12 women’s category. On the men’s side, Benson S won in the U14+ men’s category. The U12 SBSEF boys had a clean sweep of the podium with Benny A (1st), Bodhi S (2nd), Max P (3rd), Lucas Q (4th), and Niko E (5th). Wyatt F placed 5th in the U10 men’s category.
The following weekend, second-year U12s were invited to compete against the U14s at the IMD Spring Fling at Grand Targhee. SBSEF took six athletes to the event. On the girls’ side, Charlie F was the sole female JFAST athlete, and on the men’s side, Banks A, Ryler P, Colt P, Lucas Q, Niko E, and Scott H rounded out the JFAST contingent. Competing against the U14s, the JFAST crew skied well, ending the season on a high note. Congratulations to all athletes who attended.

U14 Team Update:
Team U14’s good vibes, powder skiing and skiing fast pushed hard into this spring. While Snowbird had 72 inches of powder skiing in one March week, we found creative ways to find harder snow at the UOP, ski pow and got lucky with some quality early morning training to prepare for Championship Season.
At Teton Village the Tri-Divisional group found success and big smiles under interesting weather conditions. Highlights within the U14 age class include a 6th place finish for Ledger E. in SG, Jack G. with a 9th in SL, Zach M. in 11th in SL. For the women, Norah C. led the charge with a 7th in SL while Farah K. punched in a 14th in GS.
In Mammoth at the Western Region Championships, Team Snowbird showed up in force! To start the racing off, Vonn K. capitalized on a 2nd place finish in SG. Liz E. fought a headwind, breaking into 6th and Cedric S. did his best in windy conditions to land in 14th in SG. Conditions improved slightly in GS, and so did our results. Liz E. won both runs, Cedric improved to 5th, Miles Y. put in a 7th place finish and Axel S. put in a front page finish in 15th. The SL is where Snowbird really shined! With steady side winds in the 40-50 mph range with snow, Liz E. put in a 2nd place finish, Cedric S. 4th, Axel S. 7th, Vonn K. 8th, Hendrick W. 9th, Miles Y. 10th- putting 5 Snowbird boys in the top 10! Liz’s efforts gave her the overall for the series, Vonn 5th overall, Cedric 7th and Miles 10th. An unprecedented finish to a record U14 year!
The results from Mammoth qualified Liz E. and Vonn K. for the Whistler Cup, with Cedric S. and Miles Y. as alternates for the international invite.
Quinn W. had a solid showing in Mammoth as one of the only first-year U14’s with a 26th, 21st and 21st place finish. Quinn continued his fast skiing in Grand Targhee at the Spring Fling with a 2nd place finish in GS, 9th in SL, and a victory in the Kombi. Consistent and fast! Quinn earned this opportunity by working hard in school to keep his grades up as a priority-
At the Snowcup, our 2nd years showed up big! In the SL, Liz E. beat the older athletes to take the W on day one. Heidi B. was 5th and 6th within the U14’s. Miles Y. crushed it with a 2nd within the U14’s, Hendrick W. was 5th and then first! Arlo H. put in a 10th, with Jack L. going 15th and 10th. Axel S. punched in a 4th and 2nd. In GS Heidi B. led the U14 girls with a 6th and 4th, with Ceci P. putting in an 11th and 13th and Addi O. racing to a 14th and 15th. For the boys, Miles Y. put in a 2nd and 3rd, Hendrick W. 5th, Arlo H. 7th, Jack G. 10th an 11th, and Jack L. in 11th and 10th!
That’s a lot of skiing/racing/sending in a short time! Our athletes left it all out on the snow, giving 100%. It’s time to rest, recover- and let our bodies heal. When the corn snow turns just right, I hope to see these kids out ripping again this spring!
~ Ben Reeder, Head U14 Coach
U16 Team Update:
We had an exciting finish to our season with Tri-Divisionals in Jackson Hole as well as Western Region Championships, U16 National Championships, and Snow Cup. The U16 athletes had an outstanding season, and I’m incredibly proud of the progress they made in their skiing abilities. I extend my deepest gratitude to the U16 parents and staff for their invaluable contributions to making this year a success for everyone involved.
To the parents, thank you for your unwavering dedication in getting your children to early morning practices, races, and for always adjusting to schedule changes, especially when you have multiple children participating in different places. Your willingness to provide snacks, lunches, and dinners, ensuring that everyone stayed warm and nourished, is deeply appreciated. We are also immensely grateful for the countless volunteer hours you contributed to make our races possible. Your collaboration and commitment to supporting your children’s athletic pursuits have been truly remarkable.
The season concluded with a series of exciting events, including Tri-Divisionals in Jackson Hole, Western Region Championships, U16 National Championships, and the Snow Cup. FIS Update:
April 14th returning from our final race of the year to the Lift House Parking lot for the final time. Once again thinking, I cannot believe how quickly another season has come and gone. This season definitely started off warm and dry, but by mid-January, the powder-hose spigot was opened, and it didn’t stop until the first day of Snowcup (April 4). I’ve been at Snowbird either competing or coaching for about 15 years… but it is somehow I am some combination of impressed, in disbelief, and also relieved that it can still constantly come down at the bird like it has for the last three years.
I’m really impressed with the way this group wrapped up the season. Most notably on the results side – a big congratulations to Owen Phillips for snagging a 3rd place podium finish in the final Downhill at Mammoth. On the vibes side – I really appreciate the effort and focus that this group took all the way through until they crossed the finish line on April 13th. At the start of this season, our group more than doubled in size from the previous season and included a large spread of age, talent, goals and personalities. It was really fun to see this group, slowly but surely grow as individuals, and together as a team throughout the season. It wasn’t always seamless, but I appreciate the effort given by every individual who contributed towards making this team a fun place to be, as well as one that saw some incredible improvements technical ability and understanding of ski racing.
Lastly, I want to thank the rest of our staff, Kevin Chaffee, Ben Throm, and of course, Vinny for all the hard work and passion for the sport. Secondly, but probably more importantly, to the parents, extended family and community for supporting their athletes and facilitating an incredibly unique and productive experience with us this season.
