The Wasatch Powderkeg and USA Skimo National Championships took place January 8th-12th at Solitude with sprint, mixed relay, individual and vertical races. Two SBSEF athletes competed in the individual race on January 11th. Both athletes had a lot of fun racing. The course consisted of 3 climbs and descents with a total of  2,800’ of vertical. Dorothy H placed 1st in the Junior Women’s Rec division and Maddie S placed 5th in the U16 Women’s Race division.

The second Utah Skimo Citizens Series race was held on January 14th at Brighton. We had four SBSEF athletes participate along with over 150 other racers.  All of our athletes completed at least two laps of the highly technical course on the Great Western side of the mountain.

Skimo Athlete Spotlight: Maddie S

Maddie is an exceptional multi-sport athlete. This is her second season on the Skimo team. In addition to Skimo she competes in Freeride during the winter months and races mountain bikes in the summer for the Skyline High and Maybird teams. Maddie also previously trained in modern dance.

Maddie has a great attitude and shows exceptional dedication and focus in all of her sports during team practice and through her participation in cross-training, dryland training and strength and conditioning. She also regularly takes extra time to practice on her own outside of regular team training. We’re excited to see Maddie continue to develop her athletic skills in the future.
