Greetings SBSEF!

The snow is falling, snow guns are on, and the season is upon us.  There is a level of excitement this year that feels higher than ever. Our FIS Team is skiing in Colorado right now!

I want to note that many of our athletes have put in considerable time over the off-season in and out of the gym, playing other sports and doing ski specific workouts in preparation for the ski season. These efforts pay huge dividends heading into the season in terms of both performance and injury prevention.  Maintenance throughout the season is also key.  Our new gym facility was a big help, but the effort comes from the drive within the hearts and minds of our athletes.  Nice work!

On November 2nd, the Board of Directors and SBSEF Staff saw the culmination of months of preparation come together in the form of our most successful Gala ever!  The evening is not only an important night for the team in terms of fundraising, it is one of the most fun nights of the year.  Big thank you to the community for showing up to support SBSEF! Full report below.

EARLY SEASON CONDITIONS!

Every November the early snow prompts me to remind everyone that the exuberance of a new season needs to be balanced with the awareness of many shallow hazards, particularly off-piste.  Both before the resorts open, and for the first few weeks of the season, please be careful while the low tide conditions persist.  My hope is for everyone to have a full and healthy season.

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving with family and friends.  I am thankful to be part of such a great team and community, and that the new season is here!

Dream Big.  Work Hard.

2024 SBSEF Gala presented by Kühl

THANK YOU TO THE FRIENDS AND FAMILY OF SBSEF! November 2 at the Cliff Lodge at Snowbird was a historic fundraising evening for the team! Athletes, families, alumni, coaches, and friends of the team celebrated over food, drinks, healthy bidding competition, and live music in shared support of SBSEF. This year’s Gala was the single largest day of fundraising in SBSEF history and will directly impact scholarships and programs; supporting the next generation of winter athletes in Little Cottonwood Canyon. SBSEF relies on fundraising to support athletes in the program and to keep costs down for all families. Three alumni speakers, Bella Wright, US Ski Team Member, John Collinson, Professional Big Mountain Skier, and Jared Goldberg, US Ski Team Member spoke about the importance of the SBSEF and Snowbird in in their success and lives. We could not be more grateful for the enthusiasm at this Gala–thank you to all those who attended, all those who made this night possible, and all those who continue to support SBSEF athletes and coaches to foster a passion and lifelong love of winter sports and an active outdoor lifestyle.

If you are still interested in supporting SBSEF, there are limited edition prints of the custom Gala artwork from artist and former Devo coach Aniken Palola available online. Click here for more information.

SBSEF Skills Quest Fitness Test:

The SBSEF Alpine and Freeride teams came together on November 1st to complete the US Ski and Snowboard SkillsQuest Fitness test. The physical demands of skiing require amazing strength, power, agility, endurance, and balance. An athlete’s fitness level will directly contribute to on-hill success as it facilitates an athlete’s ability to tolerate high volumes of skiing as well as injury prevention. Congratulations to all athletes as this is an extremely taxing assessment and Snowbird athletes excelled.
Congratulations to all athletes who participated. Below are the updated record boards for the team.

Yurt Update:

FIS Coach Kevin Chaffee has led the charge of getting the Yurt rebuilt for the 2024-25 season.  Big THANK YOU to those who donated labor, dollars, and a TV to the project, this will benefit everyone this year!  It is not finished, but is getting close, and will be in time for the season.  We are still accepting donations on the project if you are so inclined.  CLICK HERE

Lift/Snowmaking Update:

The new Wilbere Chair is up and running!  They are finishing up work on the top and bottom terminals, but the lift is operational. The new snow-making line is also already in use on our expanded race venue (Bryce’s).  This combo of developments is a game-changing upgrade for the venue.  THANK YOU SNOWBIRD!  The Ballpark is going to function quite differently this year.  We are working with Snowbird to provide photo-based diagrams of how we will use the space.  Specifically, it will be very important that we keep Creek Road clear.  Our space to meet and leave gear has shifted up above the road on the East side of the sheds and by the new Yurt location.   It will be critical to be familiar with your group’s daily plans for meetings, lunch, and training.
