January 2025 Team Update
Greetings SBSEF,
After a slow start the snow has arrived, and Little Cottonwood Canyon has been transformed into a winter wonderland. The skiing has been excellent lately, and we are well into competition season.
I have to give a special shout-out to Hannah Baldwin who qualified for World Junior Freeride Championships, traveled to Kappl, Austria for the event, and WON!!! This is an absolutely incredible achievement and a major feather in the cap of our already legendary Big Mountain Program, and a huge accomplishment for Hannah!
I also have to give a shout out to alum Jared Goldberg, who landed in 2nd place in the Val Gardena World Cup Super G last month in Italy. Jared missed the win by .01 seconds! Less than the blink of an eye. Still, an absolutely historic day for Jared, and SBSEF.
Meanwhile, our BoarderX Team is on a month-long trip to Europe, where Aleks Godowski was wildcarded into his first World Cup!
Check out the complete group-by-group highlights in the update below.
Last week we hosted 5 consecutive days of racing at Snowbird on Bryce’s Run and Big Emma. with an Intermountain Cup/U216 Qualifier, followed by the first South Seires (U14/12/10) of the year. The weather was mostly good for racing and we had some great SBSEF results, and a lot of fun. The new and improved Bryce’s run is a fantastic race venue, and with that in mind I want to make mention of the tremendous support we receive from both Snowbird, and our community, in the form of volunteers and sponsors. It is always humbling for me to be a part of such a fantastic team effort, and I think we collectively do a great job too! Big THANKS to everyone who came out to help out!
Next up on the homefront is the IFSA 2 Star Regional events January 27-28 in the Silverfox venue, the traditional event to start off our Big Mountain comp season at Snowbird. We also have the Devo Cookie Cup that weekend on Bryce’s Run. The Cookie Cup is a fun intro to racing, and represents the first race for many of our youngest athletes. In February we will host the Bryce Astle FIS Elite Slaloms, this race features many of the top Regional and Collegiate racers from the West, and is a traditional proving grounds for our fastest skiers, and is a qualifier for US Nationals.
Lots of action and lots of excitement in the coming weeks. Come check it out!
Best,
SBSEF Executive Director
