Freeride December Update
After multiple setbacks due to the unseasonably warm and dry weather, the Freeride team was able to begin on-snow training on December 11th. Even though we haven’t been able to ski as early as planned, we have been able to train indoors at Woodward. Many athletes have made significant progress in their skills on inline skates and air awareness on trampolines. All of those skills will translate directly to higher performance on skis.
Despite the low snow conditions and delayed openings, the coaches were able to get some quality pre-season training in with veteran Alta ski instructor and U15 parent Eric McLoughlin on the 7th. Thank you, Eric, for giving our coaches some great tools to improve our coaching.
Looking ahead, the focus for the remainder of the month will be on developing technical fundamentals to give our athletes a strong foundation before moving into our competition training block beginning in January. We have a great holiday camp planned with two 5-day blocks of training including lots of skiing, along with several additional educational opportunities, including mental performance training, avalanche safety training, and a session on sports nutrition.
There are still spots available for the American Avalanche Institute Level 1 course on December 27th and 28th. Taking the course is a great opportunity to learn about avalanche safety and backcountry travel practices with your teammates. The course is open to all SBSEF athletes ages 14+ and any interested parents. Registration for the course is available HERE
New this season, we will be offering strength and conditioning throughout the winter for both the U15 and U19 groups. Consistency is key with strength and conditioning, and we’re excited to continue the momentum that was built with many athletes throughout the summer and fall. We’ll have a U15 workout from 4:30-5:30 pm and a U19 workout from 5:30-6:30 pm each Thursday throughout the season at the team gym.
